A Snapshot Of The ETF/ETP Industry In Canada - Data

Assets invested in exchange-traded funds and products listed in Canada increased 2.6 per cent in the first half of 2015, according to ETFGI’s preliminary report.

At June 30, the Canadian ETF industry had 367 ETFs, with 521 listings and assets of $68 billion.

Year to date through June 30, ETFs/ETPs in Canada have seen net inflows of $6.6 billion. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with $3.1 billion, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with $2.6 billion, while commodity ETFs/ETPs suffered net outflows of $17 million.

In June, Canada-listed ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $984 million. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with $814 million, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with $85 million, and commodity ETFs/ETPs with $20 million.

During the first half of 2015, BMO Asset Management netted the largest net ETF/ETP inflows with $2.9 billion, followed by Vanguard with $1.1 billion, iShares with $761 million, RBC Global Asset  with $466 million, Mirae Horizons with $356 million and First Asset with $343 million.

In June, iShares gathered the largest net Canada-listed ETF/ETP inflows with $518 million, followed by BMO AM with $146 million and Vanguard with $124 million net inflows.

“June was a difficult month for most markets around the world. The S&P 500 index ended June down 2 per cent for the month and finished the first half of 2015 up 1%. Market performance in the first half of 2015 was impacted by a number of uncertainties in the first half of 2015: the situation in Greece and the impact on the Eurozone, when the Fed will raise interest rates, volatility in the Chinese market and the MERS outbreak in South Korea,” said managing partner of ETFGI, Deborah Fuhr.

Global ETFs/ETPs hit a new record in gathering $152 billion in net new assets in the first half of 2015. At the end of June, the global industry had 5,832 ETFs and products, with 11,295 listings and assets of $2.971 trillion, from 259 providers listed on 62 exchanges in 51 countries. The prior record of assets gathered by ETFs/ETPs was $130 billion in the first half of 2014 .
